I learn something new everyday

A ballast is a small object designed to constrict the flow of electric current in florescent lights. Apparently the ballast is what makes the annoying humming sound when a florescent lights is on. It contains gases that sometimes seep out and even cause smoke. A ballast in a florescent light on the fourth floor of North Village set off fire alarms and sprinklers Wednesday. Who thought some small apparatus in a florescent light could cause such a ruckus?

I’m oddly intrigued by ballasts and florescent lights now. Maybe I should forget journalism and become an electrician. Just kidding.

And by the way, you can look in the “Home Life” category for tips on house keeping, saving money, and Do-It-Yourself projects. Enjoy!
